LAS VEGAS, NV – University at Buffalo redshirt-freshman Sam Schuyler won the 97 kg freestyle national championship at the UWW Junior Nationals this weekend in Las Vegas. Unseeded entering the event, Schuyler went 4-0 to take home the title.
Schuyler opened with a 7-2 decision over fourth-seeded Owen Trephan, an NC State commit, to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Schuyler took out SIU-Edwardsville's Aric Bohn, the 2017 Wisconsin state champion, 11-4, to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Schuyler defeated Oklahoma State's Austin Harris, the 2017 Oregon state champion, 6-3, to advance to the title bout.
Schuyler defeated sixth-ranked Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State, 17-13, to win the title. Sloan was the Iowa state champion.
Fellow Bull, Pete Acciardi, also competed well, finishing seventh in the 86 kg bracket.
