CLEVELAND, OH – Three University at Buffalo wrestlers were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, the league announced on Monday. Kyle Akins and Brett Perry were named for the third straight season, while Derek Spann was a first time selection.
Akins is a senior communication major with a 3.4 grade point average. He went 17-11 on the year, including 11-6 in duals and 4-3 in MAC duals. He finished fifth at the MAC Championships at 125 lbs.
Perry is a senior mechanical engineering major with a 3.4 GPA. Perry was 20-11 overall and went 9-4 duals and 5-2 MAC duals on the season. He was the MAC Champion at 197 lbs. and advanced to the second day at the NCAA Championships.
Spann is a redshirt-sophomore social sciences major with a 3.5 GPA. He went 21-6 overall, including 16-1 in duals and a perfect 7-0 in MAC duals. He finished second at the MAC Championships in the 133-lb. bracket and was a national qualifier.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
