NORFOLK, VA – It was a successful start to the Mid-American Conference Championships for the University at Buffalo as four Bulls advanced to Saturday's finals. Derek Spann, Bryan Lantry, Troy Keller and Brett Perry will all have a shot at a MAC title on Saturday. As a team, the Bulls sit in second place following the first day at Old Dominion University.
Spann advanced to the finals of the 133-lb. bracket by winning both of his bouts on the day. He cruised in his first match, winning an 11-2 decision over Old Dominion's Trevon Majette. Spann had a tougher test in the semifinals, but was able to get by Ohio's Mario Guillen, 6-4. A second-period reversal by Spann was the difference in the match.
Lantry advanced to the finals for the third straight season. And for the third straight season, he'll face a Missouri wrestler in the finals looking for his first MAC title. Lantry made easy work of his opponents to get to the finals. He opened with a 16-2 major decision over Northern Illinois' Drew West and followed with a 4-0 decision over Kent State's Cory Simpson.
Keller won both of his matches to advance to the finals of the 165 bracket. Keller opened with a 9-2 decision over Shane Jones of Old Dominion. In the semis, he earned a 5-2 decision over Nate Higgins of SIU-Edwardsville. With the match knotted, 2-2, heading into the third period, Keller used a late reversal and the riding time point to pull out the three-point victory.
At 197, Perry was the final Bull to advance to the final. The UB senior won both of his matches rather easily. Perry started by winning a 17-6 major decision over Ohio's Derek Hillman. He followed with an 8-3 decision over SIU-Edwardville's Christian DuLaney to advance to the finals for the first time in his career.
Tomorrow's consolation matches will begin at noon with the championship matches to follow at 2 pm.
