Bulls Can’t Capitalize on Early Momentum and Fall at #6 Missouri, 30-8

COLUMBIA, MO – The University at Buffalo wrestling team won its first two matches against sixth-ranked Missouri, but eventually lost to the high-powered Tigers, 30-8, at the Hearnes Center on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped the Bulls' two-match win streak.

Kyle Akins got the Bulls off to a great start with a second-period pin of Cameron Valdiviez at 125 lbs. It was Akins' second pin in his last three matches and gave the Bulls a 6-0 lead.

Derek Spann followed with a 6-2 decision over Allan Hart at 133. Spann recorded two reversals to help win the match. With the win, the Bulls redshirt-sophomore improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

However, the Tigers would win the remaining matches, but not without a fight. Alex Smythe dropped an 11-9 decision in overtime at 157. Troy Keller lost to #13 Connor Flynn, 7-6, with the riding time point being the difference. At 197, Brett Perry lost to Wyatt Koelling, 3-1, in overtime.

"We battled the sixth-ranked in the country and had them on the ropes," head coach John Stutzman said. "I'm proud of these guys. We competed hard and that's all you can ask for."

Up next, the Bulls will finally host a home dual when Clarion comes to Alumni Arena on December 22.
