Bulls Drop First MAC Dual at #4 Missouri on Thursday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped its first Mid-American Conference dual of the season, losing at fourth-ranked Missouri, 37-6, at the Hearnes Center on Thursday afternoon. Due to injuries and illness, head coach John Stutzman had to hold five starters out of the lineup and utilized some of his youngsters.

Justin Patrick started things off with an 11-10 sudden victory over Barlow McGhee at 125. McGhee took control of the match early with three first-period takedowns to take a 6-3 lead after the first. However, Patrick stormed back and wore out McGhee. Patrick was awarded two stall points in the second period to cut the lead to 6-5. In the third, Patrick got a late takedown and earned the riding time point to force overtime. In the first overtime, Patrick was awarded a third stall point to win the match.

Missouri featured six Top 10 nationally-ranked wrestlers and they were dominant. Jaydin Eierman (141) and Daniel Lewis (174) both ranked fourth in the nation in their respective weight classes and both earned first-period falls.

Ian James earned his first career dual win with a 3-2 decision over Dante Jiovenetta. James' second-period takedown proved to be the difference in the match.

"There are high expectations here and everyone needs to understand that and strive for greatness," Stutzman said. "This is not a program that will accept anything but your best effort and 100 percent commitment to our team goals. You are measured by the best competition and as a program we need to get better to achieve our team and individual goals."

Buffalo dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the MAC with the loss. The Bulls are back in action on Friday night when they wrestle at SIU-Edwardsville.
