Patterson Claims Buffalo’s Tenth-Straight Shot Put Championship at Day Two of Outdoors

MUNCIE, IND. – The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams completed the second day of action at the 2019 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Ball St. University at the Briner Sports Complex on Friday. The day was highlighted by senior Devon Patterson's victory in the men's shot put event with a distance of 17.98m, earning himself an individual MAC Championship, the second outdoor championship of his career in the event. Patterson's championship performance continues the Bull's dominance in the shot put event, as it marks the 10th consecutive year a Bull has won the event.

Buffalo also posted notable performances in the men's hammer throw event, as two Bulls were able to earn points as podium finishers with junior Sam Wray (52.87m) and freshman Caleb Nickens (51.90m) placing fifth and seventh in the event respectively. Bulls fans will have a lot to look forward to in the future, as Nickens' distance was the highest out of any freshman competitor by over four meters.

In the men's 800m event, it was once again Buffalo junior Leon Atkins who would collect the victory in the event, crossing the finishing line with a time of 1:54.96, the fastest qualfying time in the event. Atkins will compete for the MAC Championship in the final heat scheduled for 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Also competing in tomorrow's 800m final is senior Dan Muldoon.

On the women's side, senior Crystal Henderson set a new personal best mark in the 100HH event, crossing the line in a time of 13.81, advancing her to the final heat slated for 1:45 p.m. tomorrow. Also advancing to a final heat on Saturday is sophomore Jhada Francis, clocking in a time of 12.09 in the 100m race. The final heat for that race will commence at 2:30 p.m.

Senior Amy Villarini clocked in a new personal best time of 55.68 in the 400m event, and will run in tomorrow's final heat scheduled for 2:10 p.m.

Junior Sydney March also set a new personal best on the track this afternoon as she paced herself to a time of 2:14.54 in the 800m, qualifying for the final heat that takes place at 2:50 p.m. tomorrow.

The 2019 MAC Outdoor T&F Championships will resume tomorrow for the final day of competition, as things are slated to get underway at 11:00 a.m. with a variety of field events, including the men's discus throw and high jump finals. Field events are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay are will continue from there in a rolling format. Fans interested in watching a live stream of events can do so here.
