School Record Snapped as Bulls Battle at Penn Relays


PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed Friday at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

The women's 4x1,500-meter relay team of Meghan Manley, Melinda Wheeler, Corinne Birchard and Amy Shaw clocked a 10th-place finish of 18:48.55 to set a new school record. The previous record of 19:33.44 set by Jen Jezorski, Kelli O'Brien, Aleksandra Bykowska and Kate Kohout stood since 2005.

The men's squad hit four Mid-American Conference automatic qualifiers on the day. Ryan Billian met a pair racing to a third-place finish out of 18 in the 100 with a time of 10.50 and by placing fifth in the long jump championship with a 7.33-meter mark. He will compere in the sprint finals Saturday. Austin Ashby also hit 7.33 meters in the long to place third out of 40 in the college long jump. Jonathan Jones was the runner-up in the shot put championship with a toss of 19.81 meters.

In the college shot put, Devon Patterson placed 21st out of 50 competitors with a mark of 16.39 meters. Ryan Cribbin followed in 29th with a throw of 16.09 meters and Sean Harvey finished 48th with a 14.69-meter heave.

The men's 4x100 relay of Darien Johnson, Joshua Gali, Mitchell Fuller and Billian placed 16th out of 78 teams clocking in at 41.44 to qualify for Saturday's finals. The UB distance medley championship relay of Thomas Meehan, Joshua Gali, Tyler Scheving and Brian Crimmins ran second out of 26 teams with a 9:56.54 finish.

The women's 4x200 team comprised of Malayah White, Camaria Long, Kailyn Arcury and Tyra Forbes placed 22nd out of 61 teams in 1:40.19.

Long also ran the open 100. She clocked in at 11.92 to finish 17th.

The Bulls will compete in five events Saturday to conclude competition at the Penn Relays.
