Bulls Open Action at Penn Relays Thursday


PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed Thursday at the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

The Bulls hit a pair of Mid-American Conference automatic qualifiers Thursday evening. Regine Lazard placed 11th out of 57 hurdlers in the 400 with a time of 1:01.48. She won her heat by over half a second. Kelly Truppo cleared 3.80 meters in the pole vault to place fifth out of 11 vaulters to meet the conference mark.

UB's distance medley team of Meghan Manley, Camaria Long, Corinne Birchard and Melinda Wheeler flirted with the 2014 school record of 11:49.88, running seventh out of 20 teams in 11:50.20.

The women's 4x100 relay of Malayah White, Long, Kailyn Arcury and Tyra Forbes raced to a 47.55 finish to place 27th out of 98 teams. They ran second in their heat.

The Bulls had a pair of throwers compete in the shot put and the discus throws. McKenzie Kuehlewind finished 21st out of 50 in the shot with a throw of 13.02 meters. Joanna Hallisy followed in 35th place with a 12.60-meter toss. In the discus Taylor Woods finished 13th out of 25 and Miranda Daucher was 18th. Both hit their best marks on their first throws with heaves of 45.46 and 43.59 meters, respectively.

John McCarthy finished the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:50.67.

The Bulls are scheduled to compete in 11 events Friday and another three on Saturday.
