ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York indoor track & field teams competed Saturday at Cornell's Upstate Challenge at Barton Hall. The women placed third out of eight competing Division I teams, while the men finished fourth of eight.
One school record was broken on the women's side, as was one on the men's. The women had 12 top-five finishes highlighted by three Mid-American Conference automatic qualifiers. The men's squad placed 11 in the top five including four MAC AQs.
Camaria Long clocked a school-record setting 7.57 finish in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. She was the runner-up in the event with a finals time of 7.59. Both performances met the league qualifier.
Mike Morgan rewrote his own heptathlon school record winning the event with a 5,772-point showing. His Barton Hall facility-record performance ranks the third finest in the nation. Defeating the second-place finisher by over 700 points, he last set the UB school record tallying 5,766 points in 2014. Morgan hit MAC qualifiers in the high jump with a 2.10-meter clear and in the pole vault with a height of 5.00 meters.
Kailyn Arcury clocked a MAC AQ of 8.67 in the 60 hurdle prelims before placing fourth in the event with a time of 8.78. Kelly Truppo won the pole vault with a 4.00-meter clear to meet the MAC AQ. Taylor Bates followed in third with a finish of 3.70 meters.
UB had a pair of top-five finishes in the shot put and the 1,000 run. Joanna Hallisy had a 13.23-meter heave in the shot to finish second. McKenzie Kuehlewind placed third with a mark of 13.17 meters. In the 1,000 Meghan Manley placed third and Corinne Birchard fourth with times of 2:53.96 and 2:54.01, respectively.
The UB women raced to a 3:53.57 finish in the 4x400 to earn bronze. The Bulls' 3,200 relay ran fifth in 9:59.70.
Hitting MAC qualifiers for the men were Darien Johnson in the 60 dash and Devon Patterson in the shot. Johnson won the sprint with a time of 6.84, while Patterson was the runner-up in the shot with a heave of 17.43 meters.
Brian Cummiskey joined Johnson in the top five of the 60 with a 6.91 fourth-place finish. He also won the 200 clocking in at 22.15.
Austin Ashby placed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.00 meters. Ryan Cribbin had a 17.12-meter toss in the weight to place fifth. Also finishing fifth, Treyvon Mask raced to a time of 1:05.80 in the 500.
The Bulls' 4x400 team placed fourth with a time of 3:26.49.
UB will return to action on Jan. 30-31 at the PSU National Meet and the SPIRE Midwest Open.
