BLOOMINGTON, IN – University at Buffalo throwers Matt Gac and Becky O'Brien earned trips to the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships as they finished among the top 12 in men's and women's discus as the East Region Preliminary Rounds came to a close at Indiana University on Saturday.
Gac finished ninth in the men's discus to claim his second consecutive trip to the national finals. He turned in a top throw of 180-8 on his first attempt of the first round and was able to survive the first cutdown of throwers from 48 to 16. After fouling on his first two attempts of the second round, Gac threw 172-3 (52.50m), eight feet shy of his first round toss.
Evan Palmer finished 18th in the competition and was eliminated following the first round. Palmer had only one legal throw, measuring 174-8 (53.25m), on the first of his three attempts.
O'Brien scored a sixth-place finish in the women's discus punching her second ticket for June's National Championships in Des Moines, IA. O'Brien had a best throw of 171-11 (52.40m) which occurred on her final attempt of the second round. She qualified in the women's shot put on Friday finishing 10th.
Gac and O'Brien will be joined by Rob Golabek, who earned his first trip to the Outdoor Championships on Thursday after finishing second in the men's shot put.
