BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo's Becky O'Brien has been named as the Mid-American Conference's Women's Field Athlete of the Week. The league announced its award winners from its Cleveland headquarters this afternoon.
O'Brien won the women's discus and shot put titles at last weekend's Penn State's Jim Thorpe Open to earn the weekly award. O'Brien took the women's discus at 165-10 (50.56m) and won the shot put at 52-7.25 (16.03m), besting unattached entrant and UB record holder Kristy Woods by 9.25 inches. Her top discus and shot put performances this season lead the Mid-American Conference by four feet in both events.
O'Brien's double wins at the Jim Thorpe meet come a week after she won the Penn Relays Championships Section of the discus. She has won the discus in six meets this season while also taking the shot put in four of six meets, while finishing second in the event at the Penn Relays. Nationally, she currently is ranked fourth in the East Region in the shot put and 11th in the East Region in the discus.
This is O'Brien's second MAC weekly honor this season. She was named the Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on February 1.
The Bulls open the MAC Track and Field Championships at Northern Illinois on Thursday.
