Golabek Wins MAC Athlete of the Week Award for Fifth Time

BUFFALO, NY – For the fifth time during the 2010-11 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, the University at Buffalo's Rob Golabek has been named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Field Athlete of the Week. The league announced their weekly award winners from its Cleveland headquarters on Tuesday.

At last weekend's Penn Relays, Golabek finished second in the men's shot put championship with a best throw of 62-7.75 (19.08m). The throw was a half-inch shy of the school record Golabek had set earlier this season at the Texas Relays. Hayden Baillio of Texas, who finished third to Golabek in Austin, won the Penn competition at 64-0.25 (19.51m).

The Hamburg, NY native holds the UB school record in the shot put at 62-7.75 (19.09m). The throw is presently the fourth best in the nation this season.

Since winning the 2010 MAC outdoor shot put title with a then-school record heave, Golabek has added nearly a full meter to the UB mark in the 2011 season.

This is his second Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honor, having previously won the award on April 13 following the Texas Relays. The junior was selected as the MAC's top indoor field performer three times this winter garnering honors on January 19, February 1 and 8. Golabek capped his indoor season with a first-team All-America performance as he placed eighth in the men's shot put at the NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, TX.

The Bulls conclude the regular season on Saturday at Penn State's Jim Thorpe Invitational. The MAC Championships in DeKalb, IL begin on May 12.
