Track Teams Compete in Philadelphia and Ithaca
The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams traveled to a pair of venues last week. Several Bulls competed at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia while the remainder of the squads traveled to Ithaca for the Big Red Invitational, hosted by Cornell University. There was no team scoring at either meet.
O'Brien Wins Discus, Second in Shot Put at Penn Relays
Becky O'Brien won the women's discus and finished second in the shot put at the Penn Relays.O'Brien claimed her first Penn Relays title with her victory in the discus. with a winning throw of 173-1 (52.77m) to take the event by two and a half feet over Minnesota's Nicole Tzanakis (170-7, 52.01m). O'Brien's throw was just two inches shy of the UB school record she set earlier this season. O'Brien finished second in the championship division of the women's shot put with a season-best throw of 54-1.75 (16.50m) to finish behind Faith Sherrill of Indiana (57-10.50, 17.64m). UB's Shante' White and Erin Miller competed in the women's hammer and discus competitions. White finished fifth of 11 in the championship division of the hammer at 177-7 (54.15m) while Miller finished sixth of 31 in the collegiate division at 169-10 (51.78m). Both White and Miller were entered in the college division of the discus. White finished 10 of 24 entrants with a top throw of 138-11 (42.35m). Miller was 12th at 138-0 (42.07m).
Golabek Earns Second-Place Finish
Rob Golabek finished second in the men's shot put championship with a best throw of 62-7.75 (19.08m). The throw was a half-inch shy of the school record Golabek had set earlier this season. Hayden Baillio of Texas won the event at 64-0.25 (19.51m). Matt Gac and Evan Palmer were in action in the men's discus and hammer throw competitions. In the discus, Gac finished sixth in a field of 10 in the championship division with a toss of 175-7 (53.52m). Palmer, competing in the larger college division field, placed 10th of 30 entrants at 160-0 (48.79m). In the collegiate division of the men's hammer throw. Palmer finished 11th of 33 entrants with a best throw of 177-7 (54.15m). Gac placed 14th in the field with a top mark of 176-9 (53.89m).
Hurdlers Highlight Big Red Meet
Competing on Sunday at the Big Red Invitational in Ithaca, the UB men won four events on Sunday, including a sweep of the hurdles events. Andrew Omoregie took the 110-meter hurdles in 14.24 after qualifying third in the preliminaries in 14.66. Will Cole took the 400-meter hurdles in 52.78. Cole won his race by more than a full second over Cornell's Kenny McClain. The Bulls were also strong in the jumps as Eugene Kennedy won the men's high jump at 6-8.25 (2.04m) with Peter Bligh finishing third at 6-4.25 (1.94m). In the long jump, the Bulls took the top two slots. Chris Davis won the competition with a best leap of 24-0.25 (7.32m) with Jonathan Alexis finishing second at 23-10 (7.26m).
Bridgette Kendricks, who played basketball for four seasons with the Bulls, made her debut for the track team a memorable one on Sunday. Kendricks won the women's 100-meters in 12.23 and finished second in the 200-meters in 25.31.
