NOTRE DAME, IN – In hopes of improving on their existing marks, University at Buffalo athletes Rob Golabek and Matt Gac competed at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational over the weekend.
Golabek won the men's shot put competition on Saturday with a best throw of 61-11.75 (18.89m), just three-quarters of an inch of his school record heave of 62-0.50 (18.91m) at last month's Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at Penn State. Golabek finished more than a foot better than a pair of Big Ten throwers, Zach Hill of Michigan State (60-10, 18.54m) and Bill Hardcastle of Purdue (60-3.25, 18.37m). Prior to Saturday, Golabek ranked 11th in the nation in the shot put.
On Friday night, Gac finished fourth in the men's weight throw at 63-10.50 (19.47m). The top throw by Gac was just shy of top mark in 2011 of 65-0 (19.81m) set at the Penn State National Meet in January.
The Alex Wilson Invitational is one of several meets held around the country just prior to the NCAA Championships in which competitors get a last chance to improve on their marks and make the national field.
The NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships begin March 11 in College Station, TX.
