UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – University at Buffalo women's shot putter Becky O'Brien broke the school and Mid-American Conference records on Saturday as she won the shot put competition at the Penn State National Meet on Saturday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
O'Brien set the winning mark of 56-1.25 (17.10m) on her final attempt of the day, bettering her three previous measured throws of the day, all of which exceeded 52-9.75 (16.10m). O'Brien, in her first season as a member of UB's indoor track program, bettered Kristy Woods' school record of 53-9.50 (16.40m) on her final preliminary round throw, by nearly six inches. O'Brien broke the MAC indoor mark of 54-4.75 (16.58m), set at the 1999 league championship meet by Leslie Vidmar of Kent State, with the final throw. O'Brien's throw also automatically qualified her for March's NCAA Indoor National Championships.
Woods, competing as an unattached entrant, finished second to O'Brien with a top mark of 50-10.25 (15.50m). Rachel Roberts placed eighth overall as she reached the final round registering a season-best throw of 47-4.25 (14.43m) on the day.
Three other school records were set by the Bulls on Saturday. Rob Golabek broke the men's shot put record for the third time in three weeks. Golabek finished with a toss of 60-6.50 (18.45m), adding 2.5 inches from last week's mark. He finished third overall. Peter Bligh finished fourth in the men's high jump competition with a top height of 6-10.25 (2.10m). Bligh bettered Eugene Kennedy's previous mark of 6-9 (2.06m) set in the 2007 season. Freshman Donna Jeanty broke the school record in the women's 500-meter dash. Jeanty finished fifth overall in 1:15.42, shaving a half-second off the previous record, set in 2009 by Jackie Burns. Freshman Asia Henry finished 13th in the 500-meters in 1:17.18.
Dylan Conway scored a second-place finish in the men's 3,000-meter run in 8:28.64, finishing .36 seconds behind Norfolk State's Philemon Kimutai (8:28.28). Conway cut nine seconds from his previous season best of 8:37.23 set at the season-opening Doug Raymond Invitational on January 15.
Sophomore Jamiee McClary placed 10th in the women's 200-meter dash in 24.65, slicing .63 seconds from her previous season-best time, just two-tenths off her school record of 24.45 set last season.
The Bulls set season-best marks in the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays. The women's foursome of McClary, Henry, Burns and Jeanty finished 11th among 25 squads in 3:48.10, taking more than three seconds off the previous best. The men placed 13th among 17 teams in 3:18.89, almost seven seconds better than their previous best. The men's foursome consisted of Stephon Beckford, Andre Britton, Will Cole and Brian Smith.
The Bulls return to Penn State next weekend to participate in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup.
