Maskulinski Headed to National Championships

GREENSBORO, NC – University at Buffalo women's pole vaulterTiffany Maskulinski earned her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships after she finished seventh in the NCAA Eastern Preliminary Rounds at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track on Friday.


Maskulinski, the Mid-American Conference champion, finished seventh in the women's pole vault. The senior was one of seven vaulters to clear 13-1.50 (4.00m). She was successful on her third and final attempt at the height. Three vaulters, Carrie Kayes of Akron, Kylie Hutson of Indiana State and Brianna Neumann of Purdue, cleared the height on their first attempts and tied for first place.


Men's shot putter Jake Madonia just missed advancing to the national finals as he finished 13th in his event, missing the 12th spot by less than six inches. Madonia posted a season-best toss of 58-1.75 (17.72m), setting the mark on his first attempt of the opening round and was one of 17 throwers to advance into the second round with the top 12 finishers advancing on to the national finals in Eugene, OR. UB had two throwers miss the opening cut as Rob Golabek finished 18th at 57-5.75 (17.52m) and Alex Stamatakis place 34th with a toss of 55-2.75 (16.83m).


In other field events on Friday, sophomore Casey Garbaty finished 27th in the men's javelin throw. Garbaty, the UB record holder and MAC champion in the event, posted his best throw of 200-3 (61.05m) on his first of three attempts. Garbaty also posted a throw of 182-4 (55.58m) on his third attempt after fouling on his second throw.


UB's two women's hammer throwers, Kristy Woods and Shante' White also missed advancing out of the opening round in their event. Woods placed 25th with a top throw of 177-5 (54.09m) while White was 34th at 170-11 (52.11m). Woods qualified for the national championships in the women's shot put on Thursday.


On the track, UB's 200-meter entrants, Jamiee McClary and Brian Smith were eliminated in the first round of their races. McClary finished 39th overall in 24.27 while Smith placed 42nd in the men's bracket in 21.72.


Action concludes on Saturday as UB athletes Matt Gac and Becky O'Brien compete in the men's and women's discus. Gac earned a spot in the national field on Thursday in the men's hammer throw.
