UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University at Buffalo men's and women's indoor track and field teams traveled to Penn State for the second consecutive weekend, this time competing in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. The UB women finished fifth in a 14-team field while the men took seventh among 12 teams.
Sophomore women's thrower Kristy Woods was a double winner for the Bulls as she took both the shot put and weight throw competitions. Woods remained undefeated in the shot put, winning for the fifth straight week. Woods added to her school record and NCAA provisional qualifying mark with her throw of 53-0.25 (16.16m), bettering the record of 52-10 (16.10m) she set on January 23 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge. Woods also won the weight throw for the second time this season with her winning toss of 58-10.25 (17.94). Women's teammates Erin Miller and Shante' White also scored in the throws. Miller took sixth in the shot put (43-11.25, 13.39m) and seventh in the weight throw (52-7.25, 16.03m) while White placed eighth in the weight throw (52-5.50, 15.99m).
The UB men were paced by the distance medley relay team won in a school record 9:54.65. The foursome of John Bauman, Isaiah Mask,Shaun Brummert and Ryan Zillmann cut more than five seconds off the old mark, set in 2006. The time also lowered UB's IC4A qualification mark.
Rob Golabek broke the men's record in the shot put for the second straight week. Golabek finished second in the competition at 59-7.75 (18.18m) as he increased five inches to last week's mark. Golabek also took fourth in the men's weight throw at 58-1 (17.70m). Jake Madonia was fourth in the shot put at 58-2.50 (17.74m).
Three other Bulls scored second-place finishes while UB also had a pair of third-place showings.Matt Gac finished second in the men's weight throw at 61-5.75 (18.74m). In the 600-meter races, Jackie Burns placed second in the women's event at 1:34.50. Brummert was second (1:19.28) and Mask third (1:19.31) in the men's competition. Brummert broke the men's 600-meter record with his finish.
The squads travel to the Akron Invitational next weekend.
