Track Teams Pick Up Victories at Big Red Invitational

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Big Red Invitational at Cornell University on Sunday. There were no team results as the Bulls won nine total events.

 

As has been the case throughout the season, UB's efforts were bolstered by its finishes in the throwing events.

 

In the shot put events, UB swept the men's and women's competitions.Kristy Woods set a Kane Complex record with her win as she finished with a throw of 52-10 (16.10m). The throw obliterated the previous record, set last year by UB's Tina Villa by nearly five feet. Becky O'Brien took second at 49-2.25 (14.99m) and Erin Miller was fourth at 43-7.75. The Bulls also finished in the top three spots in the men's shot put as Jake Madonia took top honors with his throw of 55-8.50 (16.98m). Rob Golabek was second at 55-0.25 (16.77m) and Alex Stamatakis was third at 53-11.25 (16.44m).

 

The Bulls also swept the hammer throws as Woods led a 1-2-3 finish for the women with her winning effort of 185-9 (56.61m). Shante' Whitetook second at 180-5 (54.99m) and Miller tossed a season-best 163-0 (49.68m) for third place. Matt Gac won the men's hammer throw at 195-2 (59.50m) with Golabek placing second at 179-2 (54.60m).

 

O'Brien took first in the women's discus as the Bulls claimed the top three positions. O'Brien won the competition with a throw of 151-9 (46.26m) while White took second at 150-1 (45.76m) and Miller was third at 136-4 (41.56m). Gac finished second in the men's discus at 165-4 (50.40m) while Madonia turned in a season-best with his third-place finish at 164-3 (50.06m).

 

The UB men swept the hurdle races on Sunday. In the 110-meter hurdles, the Bulls took the top two spots with Andrew Omoregie andAustin Archibald turning in season-best times. Omoregie won the race in 14.51 with Archibald finishing in 14.65. The Bulls picked up first- and third-place finishes in the men's 400-meter hurdles as John Connorsposted a season-best of 53.30 to win the race. Brendan Hagerty was third in 54.88.

 

A pair of jumpers also won events for the Bulls. Peter Bligh set a season-best to take the men's high jump at 6-8.25 (2.04m). Ajla Glavasevic tied her season-best mark to win the women's long jump at 18-8 (5.69m). She also took third in the women's high jump at 5-3 (1.60m).

 

UB racers also had four second-place track finishes. Women's sprinter Natalie Fildes set season-best times in both the 100-meters (12.55) and 200-meters (25.65). Daina Fosterfinished second in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.61. For the UB men, MIchael Pressler cut more than 10 seconds off his season-best with his 3:56.86 clocking in the 1,500-meters.

 

The Bulls travel to Columbus, OH next weekend for the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State University.
