BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams hosted the annual UB Invitational on Saturday and the Bulls came away with 12 women's and 13 men's winners in the meet. There was no team scoring in the meet as cold, rainy and windy conditions dictated competition.
Four Bulls won two events apiece on Saturday.
Freshman sprinter Jamiee McClary swept the women's 100-meters (12.25) and 200-meters (26.07). She also ran the opening leg of UB's 4x100-meter relay with Brooklynn Ventura, Jessica Cooper and Natalie Fildes as the Bulls posted a 48.97 clocking as the only competitors. Ventura also won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.61.
Also winning a pair of women's events was sophomore Becky O'Brien. The weight thrower won the women's shot put with a season-best toss of 51-10 (15.80m) and also took the discus at 152-8 (46.54m).
Junior Matt Gac won the men's discus with a throw of 174-6 (53.20m) and the men's hammer throw at 184-6 (56.25m).
Men's senior spirnter Dan Schichtel won the 100-meters in a season-best 10.73, establishing UB's fastest time of the season in the event. Schichtel edged out teammate Ezekiel Porter by three-hundredths of a second to take the win. The two combined with Dan Harris and Brian Smith to win the 4x100-meter relay in 42.94. Smith also posted a season-best with his win in the 200-meters (21.56).
Other men's track winners included freshmanMichael Pressler in the 1,500-meters in a season-best 4:06.00 and junior Andrew Omoregie in the 110-meter hurdles (14.85). In the field events, junior Daniel Reynolds won the pole vault (14-5.25, 4.40m), sophomoreChris Davis won the long jump (21-11.75, 6.70m), sophomore Rob Golabek won the shot put (57-8.25, 17.58m) and senior Steve Maciejewski posted a season-best with his win in the javelin (175-0, 53.33m).
Junior Katelyn Laurey won the women's 400-meters in 1:01.42. Freshman Aimee Hopkins set a season-best with her win in the 800-meters (2:20.15). SophomoreJackie Burns took the 1,500-meters in 4:40.56. In field events, seniorJillian Bliss won the long jump with a season-best leap of 15-2.25 (4.63m). Junior Ajla Glavasevic took the triple jump (36-11, 11.25m) and sophomore Shante' White won the hammer throw (180-3, 54.95m).
The Bulls send their top athletes next week to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. UB is also slated to compete at the Big Red Invitational in Ithaca on April 25.
