BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's swimming & diving team will play host to the Bowling Green Falcons (7-3, 1-2 MAC) on Friday afternoon, as the team prepares to honor its seniors at Alumni Arena Natatorium in the last dual meet of the season. The teams last met in dual meet competition during the 2016-17 season with Buffalo claiming a 187-113 win over the Falcons.
The Falcons come into Alumni Arena with a 7-3 (1-1 MAC) dual meet record, as the team started the season off hot, shooting out to an unblemished 7-0 record before dropping their last three meets, including a 122-167 defeat at the hands of MAC foe Eastern Michigan on Jan. 26. The Falcons have a busy itinerary this week as they will compete against MAC favorites Akron on Thursday night before traveling to Buffalo for Friday's afternoon meet. Following this week's competition, the Falcons have just one meet left on their schedule as the team heads to Toledo on Feb. 8 to take on the Rockets.
Buffalo comes into Fridays meet having not competed since being narrowly edged out by Eastern Michigan, 159-141, on Jan 19. Junior Katelyn Burns led the way for the Bulls in Ypsilanti, continuing her dominance in freestyle events that she began the season with as the skilled swimmer collected three individual victories for Buffalo on the day. Burns claimed the first victory in the 200-yard freestyle event as she was able to clock in a time of 1:51.87. Burns would claim a second individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.55. Her third individual victory was claimed in the 100-yard freestyle event, as Burns touched the wall with a time of 51.67.
Sophomore Olivia Sapio also impressed for Buffalo in the meet against EMU, as she claimed a victory for the Bulls in the 200-yard butterfly event, touching the wall at a time of 2:01.11. The time was a career-best for Sapio.
In the diving well, freshman Jae Sarkis will look to conclude the regular season off in style as the young diver shined for the Bulls at the UB Diving Invite that took place on Jan.10-12. Sarkis would collect an individual victory for Buffalo in the 3-meter diving event, earning a score of 267.05. The freshman also went on to claim second place in the 1-meter dive event with a score of 251.15 after six diving attempts.
Fridays meet against BGSU is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
Up next for the Bulls, the team will take a few weeks off from competition as they begin training for the MAC Championships slated for February 27th through March 2nd in Akon, Ohio.
