FORT MYERS, FL – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving team (0-3, 0-1 MAC) rang in the New Year in Florida Saturday as the team collected five individual victories on the afternoon, returning to the pool for the first time in a month, as they competed against FGCU and Liberty in the annual FGCU Duals hosted at the FGCU Aquatics Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Bulls squared off against CCSA opponents Liberty (9-0) and FGCU (6-6), claiming five total victories in the pool, despite falling short in both duals 179-109 and 172-117, respectively.
Sophomore Brittney Beetcher continued her dominance in the pool she started the campaign with, collecting two individual victories on the day in the 1000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle events in the first meet of the 2019 year. Beetcher clocked in an impressive time of 10:16.03 in the 100-yard freestyle event, claiming first place and finishing an entire 13 seconds ahead of the second placed swimmer from Liberty. She collected the win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.20.
In the third event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle, Buffalo junior Katelyn Burns collected a victory for the Bulls as she swam to a first place time of 1:52.10. Burns continued her solid day as she claimed yet another individual victory in the 100-yard freestyle event, swimming to victory for Buffalo with a time of 51.82. Burns finished off a successful day as she took second place in the 50-yard freestyle event, claiming a time of 23.66, just .13 seconds off of the winning swimmer from FGCU's time.
Junior sprinter Andrea Ernst would also claim a victory for the Bulls, swimming to victory in the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 58.88. Ernst took home another top-three finish on the afternoon, placing second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with teammates Catherine Schultheis, Antonia Naccarella and Burns. The relay team clocked in a solid finishing time of 3:31.45.
Next up for the Bulls, the team will host the UB Diving Invite, held anually at the Alumni Arena Natatorium next Friday, January 11th through the 13th. In a busy weekend of action for the Bulls, the team will also head down to Pittburgh to square off against Duquesne in a dual meet on Friday. The meet gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
