Dugan a MAC Champion, Bulls in Third After Day One of MAC Championships

Day One Results

BUFFALO, NY – Mike Dugan was crowned champion in the 50 freestyle to highlight day one of the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Alumni Arena Natatorium on Thursday night. Dugan broke his own school record to win the event with a time of 19.84.

"I'm pleased with how we competed today," head coach Andy Bashor said. "Both the morning and night we had some really good swims and Cade [Bennett] was good on the boards as were our other divers. We have two more days and we've got to continue to get better."

In the opening race of the evening, UB took second in the 200 freestyle relay, just .38 behind Missouri State. The team was comprised of Dugan, Phil Aronica, Tommy Steele and Antonio Lanzi.

Dan O'Connor broke his own school record to finish third in the 500 freestyle. The UB senior had a time of 4:24.57, shaving nearly three seconds off his previous best. Billy Patrum bettered his season-best time by 18 seconds to finish seventh in the event with a time of 4:27.67. Eric Culver placed eighth with a time of 4:31.86.

In the 200 individual medley, Scott Huang finished fifth with a season-best time of 1:49.48. Antonio Lanzi placed seventh with a time of 1:50.81.

In the diving well, Cade Bennett finished second on the one-meter board with a school-record score of 354.45.

In the final event of the night, UB finished third in the 400 medley relay. The team of Aronica, Huang, Dugan and Steele recorded a time of 3:15.54.

Swimming will continue with day two preliminaries tomorrow morning at 11 am.
