Trio of Bulls Earn All-MAC Honors

All-MAC honorees

BUFFALO, NY – A trio of University at Buffalo softball players were honored on Tuesday afternoon as the Mid-American Conference announced its postseason awards. Sophomore Anna Aguon and Junior Jenelle Martinez were named to the All-MAC First Team while Alexis Matheney was named to the All-Freshman Team. It marks the first time since 2014 that the Bulls have placed multiple student-athletes to the All-MAC first team.

"Congratulations Anna, Jenelle and Lexie on your All-MAC recognition," said head coach Mike Ruechel. "It's great to see Anna and Jenelle make strides year after year. I knew when Lexie came to UB that she would be something special and it's nice to see her honored by the league. We are looking forward to what next year has in store for our program."

Aguon was named to the All-MAC first team for the second straight season, as she put together a solid sophomore campaign posting a .382 batting average to go along with a team-high 13 doubles, five home runs, 18 RBI and a team-best 52 runs scored while leading the squad with a .603 slugging percentage and a .444 on base percentage. The Vancouver, WA native started 41 games in the outfield for the Bulls and notched a team-best 82 total bases.

Her 13 doubles on the season rank fifth on the program's single-season records list, while her .382 batting average is tied for fourth-best in a single-season. On the year, the left fielder posted a team-high 15 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games while batting in the heart of the Bulls lineup.

Martinez was named first team All-MAC for the first time in her UB career after cementing her place in the middle of the Bulls lineup all season long. The second baseman posted a .317 batting average to go along with four home runs, tied for the team high with 20 RBI, and compiled 20 runs scored while recording a .455 slugging percentage and a .411 on base percentage.

Matheney continues an impressive run for Bulls freshmen as Buffalo has placed at least one rookie on the All-MAC Freshman Team in five straight seasons. The Lancaster, OH native finished off her first season in the blue and white in impressive fashion as she posted a .248 batting average to go along with a team-high seven home runs, eight doubles, tied for the team high with 20 RBI and added 12 runs scored while recording a slugging percentage of .488, good for second-best on the team, and a .401 on base percentage. She also set the UB single-season record for walks with 30 and finished second in the MAC in that category.

Matheney did most of her damage when it counted most in conference play as she improved her average to .308 at the plate in league games to go along with four home runs, 11 RBI and 15 runs scored while recording a .577 slugging percentage and .446 on base percentage.

The Bulls closed out their season with a 10-32-1 overall record and went 6-10-1 in league play.
