BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped its doubleheader at Miami (OH) on Friday afternoon. The Bulls lost 4-0 in game one before falling to the RedHawks 8-1 in game two.
Offense was at a premium early in game one with the two teams combining for just three hits through four and a half innings of play until the RedHawks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a UB error and an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls looked to answer in the top of the sixth as they got runners on the corners thanks to a Martinez single and a RedHawks error but the timely hitting woes continued as Catrell Robertson grounded out to end the half inning.
Miami (OH) would break through in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits to take a 4-0 lead and that would be all they would need to secure the game one victory.
As a team, the Bulls managed just four hits while tying a season-high with 13 strikeouts. In the circle, Ally Power gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits and was one off her season-high with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Redhawks scored first again in game two, scoring on an RBI single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls got on the board in the third as back-to-back singles by Anna Aguon and Jenelle Martinez loaded the bases and Alexis Matheney scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one but they would strand two more baserunners and that would prove to be costly as Miami would score two runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead and add five more runs over the final four innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.
The series finale is set for Saturday at 1 pm.
