BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Bowling Green 11-9 in the series opener at Meserve Field on Friday afternoon. With the win the Bulls improve to 8-23-1 on the year, 5-3-1 in league play.
UB loaded the bases in the top of the second and Peters came through once again with a two-RBI single to shallow left center field to extend the lead to 4-1.
Freshman Hannah Bardeen added an insurance run in the top of the third as she took the fourth pitch of the inning deep to left for her fourth home run of the season to put UB up 5-1.
The Bulls broke the game open in the fourth as Anna Aguon scored on a Gabby Keller RBI groundout and Alissa Karjel blasted a two-run home run, her first of the year, over the left field wall to put UB up 8-1.
The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 8-3 but the Bulls answered in the top of the fifth as Aguon smacked an RBI single up the left field line and Peters ripped a two-RBI double to the wall in right center to give UB an 11-3 lead.
BGSU clawed back in the bottom of the fifth scoring six runs on six hits and one UB error to cut the lead to 11-9 but that would be as close as they would get as Ally Power struck out six of the last nine batters she faced in relief to secure the UB victory.
"It was another great offensive day for us," head coach Mike Ruechel said. "It's nice to see everyone staying focused at the plate and putting together solid at-bats. We still need to clean up a few things on defense and not give away so many free bases but we are looking forward to tomorrow's doubleheader."
Peters finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and a season-high six RBI.
The Bulls conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow, with the first game set to begin at 1 pm.
