Bulls Fall to Norfolk State in Opening Game of Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The University at Buffalo softball team dropped the opening game of the Cavalier Classic 5-4 to Norfolk State on Friday.

The Bulls were able to strike first in the top of the first, as Catrell Robertson smacked an RBI single up the middle, scoring Jenelle Martinez, to give UB a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo would add another run in the second as Hannah Bardeen led off with a double down the left field line and would later score on an error to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.

The Bulls would get a couple of insurance runs in the top of the fifth courtesy of Robertson, who blasted a two-run home run to center to give UB a 4-1 lead.

The Spartans had an answer in the bottom of the inning, as they cut the lead to 4-3 on a two-RBI single. Norfolk State would tie the game up at four on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and would walk off on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 victory.

Robertson finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. Ally Power gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out three in four and a third innings of work. Lace Smith gave up two runs on five hits in two innings of relief.

Game two of the day between Buffalo and Virginia was suspended in the third inning due to weather. Play will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. The Bulls will then face Delware at Noon, followed by another game against Virginia at 7:30 p.m.
