CLEARWATER, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team (8-13, 0-0 MAC) did not have the luck of the Irish today in day two of the Clearwater Spring Break Classic hosted by USF. Army took the opener 3-1 and the Quinnipiac Bobcats shut out the Bulls 11-0 in five innings.
In the opener, Army scored early after a leadoff double followed by two consecutive sacrifices. In the top of the third inning, Alissa Karjel drew a leadoff walk. Taylor Scott followed with a perfect SAC bunt to move Karjel into scoring position and Ufuoma Ogagan singled through the left side to send Karjel home to tie the game at one a piece. Army reclaimed the lead in the bottom frame and added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. Lace Smith went the distance in the circle allowing six hits and three earned runs through six innings of work.
The Bulls struggled in game two. The only hit came from Jenelle Martinez in the fourth inning, a double to center field. Ally Power struggled in the circle today, working for 2.3 innings and she allowed five runs. Brieanna Baker closed out the third inning and pitched the fourth and fifth innings.
"We have a goal set", said head coach Mike Roberts. "We're trying to get better every week. It may take us a couple of weeks, but we are working the process one game at a time."
The Bulls return to the diamond tomorrow to close out the weekend for a single game against the North Florida Opsreys. First pitch is set for 1:30pm EDT at USF Softball Stadium.
