MACON, GA – The University at Buffalo softball team (1-3, 0-0 MAC) collected their first win under head coach Mike Roberts on Saturday morning in their opening game of the day against Appalachian State at the Mercer Invitational. UB earned the 5-2 victory over the Mountaineers before falling to Mercer in the second game of the day, 10-3.
In the first game of the day, the Appalachian State Mountaineers were able to strike first as they crossed two runs across home in the second inning. They opened the inning with a double and single before scoring on a wild pitch and a RBI single to second base.
Buffalo was able to score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alissa Karjel connected on her second home run of the season, a solo shot, to right field to cut the Mountaineers lead in half, 2-1.
Ally Power was able to work a quick 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning before the Bulls broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning. After Leandra Jew and Jessica Goldyn reached base to open the inning, Danielle Lallos was able to double to left center to plate Jew and tie the game, 2-2. Freshman Anna Aguon then dug in and connected on her second collegiate home run, a three-run shot to dead center field, giving UB the 5-2 lead.
After allowing a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning, Power locked in for the Bulls as she struck out four batters and didn't allow a hit to secure her first win of the season.
Power had a great game in the circle for the Bulls as she went 7.0 innings and struck out eight batters while allowing just two runs and six hits.
The Buffalo offense was only able to record four hits with the big blow coming off the bat of Aguon who went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer. Karjel also went 1-for-3 with a solo homer while Lallos went 1-for-3 with a double and RBI in the win.
In the second game of the afternoon against Mercer, the Bulls got out to a slow start and they were never able to recover as the Bears scored two runs in the first inning and five in the second inning to take the 7-0 lead.
Buffalo was finally able to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning as they crossed three runs across home plate to make it 7-3. Anna Aguon opened the inning with a single and Alissa Karjel doubled to right. Jenelle Martinez then reached on a fielder's choice and collected a RBI before Taylor Scott earned her first RBI of the season with as ground out. Ufuoma Ogagan closed out the inning with an infield single to score Martinez.
The Bears wouldn't let UB get any closer as they scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth to take the 10-3 lead and eventual win.
Aguon finished off the game going 3-for-3 with a run scored while Ogagan went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Brieanna Baker started in the circle for UB and she went 2.2 innings while allowing two earned runs and three hits before being replaced by Lace Smith.
Buffalo will return to the diamond tomorrow at 1:15 pm as they close out the Mercer Invitational with a game against Morehead State.
