New Era Of UB Softball Opens Up This Weekend At Mercer Invitational

BUFFALO, NY – First year head coach Mike Roberts will make his head coaching debut this weekend as the Bulls open up their 2018 campaign at the Mercer Invitational hosted by Mercer University. UB will take part in five games this weekend down in Macon, GA at Sikes Field.

The Bulls are coming off of a disappointing 9-46 campaign last year, including a 3-21 mark in MAC play. Buffalo will return 14 players from last season led by second-team All-MAC selection Ally Power who led the Bulls in the circle with a 3.27 ERA while striking out 95 batters to go along with hitting .215 with eight RBI at the plate.

UB returns their top six hitters from a season ago as Catrell Robertson led the Bulls last season batting .304 with three home runs and 12 RBI while senior Leandra Jew ranked second on the team batting .303 with 15 runs scored. Fellow senior Danielle Lallos played in 46 games a season ago and batted .266 with a team-best 10 doubles and 14 RBI.

Sophomores Jessica Goldyn and Jenelle Martinez return to the Bulls after strong freshman campaigns that saw them each earn MAC All-Freshman Team honors. Goldyn batted .289 while scoring 18 runs and notching 15 RBI. She also had a monster season on the base paths as she went 23-for-26 in stolen base attempts, the second most stolen bases in a single season in UB softball history. Martinez started all 55 games while batting .263 with 17 runs scored and a team-high 16 RBI.

In addition, the Bulls will welcome four newcomers to the squad in 2018. Junior Alissa Karjel comes to Buffalo after spending two seasons at St. Bonaventure where she started 39 games a season ago and posted a .231 batting average and 10 RBI. Karjel is joined by Kathryn Skorka, Anna Aguon and Marlee Shaffer who will all be playing in their first collegiate weekend.

The Bulls will begin the season at 12:15 pm on Friday against Morehead State before taking on the host Mercer Bears at 2:30 pm.

On Saturday, Buffalo will open up play at 9:30 am as they take on Appalachian State before wrapping up day two with another showdown with the Mercer Bears at 2:00 pm.

UB rounds out their opening weekend with a 1:15 pm game against the Morehead State Eagles.
