BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards as junior Vilhelm Fridell was named the singles player of the week, while Ethan Nittolo and Hao Sheng Koay earned the doubles team of the week.
Fridell went a perfect 3-0 at second singles this past week as the Bulls won all three of their Mid-American Conference matches. Beginning on Monday, Fridell scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Binghamton and then on Friday he added another straight set win over Danilo Vukotic from Toledo, 6-4, 7-5. Fridell capped off the weekend with a three-set win over David Pata of Northern Illinois, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Fridell improved to 9-2 at second singles and 19-10 overall in singles action, tied for the team lead in wins.
Koay and Nittolo won all three of their doubles matches this past week at first doubles. Beginning on Monday, the pair won 7-5 against Binghamton and they followed that up on the road on Friday at Toledo with a 6-3 victory. The most impressive victory came on Sunday against Northern Illinois when Nittolo and Koay had to overcome a 5-2 deficit, fighting back to win their match in a tiebreak, clinching the doubles point against the Huskies. They are now 7-3 at first doubles and 10-8 overall.
This is the second time Fridell has been named the singles player of the week and the fifth time overall UB has won the singles honor. On the doubles side, this is the second time Nittolo and Koay have been honored.
Buffalo closes out the regular season on Friday afternoon at Miller Tennis Center when they host Ball State at 12pm. Senior Day festivities get underway at 11:45 am.
