NEW HAVEN, CT – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team concluded play at the ITA Northeast Regionals this past weekend hosted by Yale University. The Bulls had five players compete in singles and two teams compete in doubles.
In doubles action, junior Ethan Nittolo and freshman Hao Sheng Koay had the most success as they won a pair of matches, finding their way into the Round of 16. They won their first match of the tournament 8-1 over a duo from Lehigh and then followed that up with an 8-4 win over the #5 ranked team in the field from Cornell. They ultimately fell just shy of the quarterfinals, 8-5, to a pair from Dartmouth. Also competing in doubles was Villhelm Fridell and Petr Vodak, who dropped a tough 8-7 decision in their opening round.
In singles, Nittolo and Vodak both picked up victories in their opening matches. Nittolo defeated Anthony Arocho of Brown, 6-1, 6-2, before dropping a tough three-set match to Kyle Mautner from Penn, who was seeded in the top eight in the tournament. Vodak won his opening match against Alan Nunez Aguilera from St. Johns, 6-4, 7-5, but then he fell to Jackie Tang of Columbia in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Tang was ranked second in the singles field.
Koay and Fridell both received first round byes in the tournament, but they both fell in their first matches in the round of 64 in straight sets. Senior Vidit Vaghela lost his opening match in the round of 128.
The Bulls will conclude their fall schedule beginning on Friday, Nov. 10 when they head to the MAC Invite being held in Kalamazoo, MI.
