BUFFALO, NY – Head men's tennis coach Lee Nickell has announced the addition of Matthew Johnson for the upcoming spring season. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Johnson has held an ITF ranking as high as 232.
"I am excited for the addition of Matthew Johnson from South Africa," said Nickell. "Matthew is exactly what we look for when recruiting, great tennis results, strong academic background and amazing character. His experiences playing ITF tournaments have prepared him for the rigors of college tennis, and we expect him to come in and make an instant impact for our program immediately in January."
At various points during his tennis career, Johnson has been ranked as the number one juniors player in all of South Africa. He was a South African Junior National winner at the U14 level and he has played in ITF events all over the world, including Dubai, Qatar, India, Australia, Hong Kong, and many more.
He has posted a number of impressive ITF finishes, including finishing as runner up in January at the Fujairah Dubai Tournament and reaching the semifinals of an ITF tournament in Namibia in May.
He is also brings a strong academic background to UB as he was chosen for the Global young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. last February and he was a finalist for the Western Cape Economic Essay competition.
Johnson will join the Bulls in January when they begin their Mid-American Conference title defense and start the dual portion of their schedule.
The current group of Bulls will continue fall action on October 18 when UB heads to Yale for the ITA Northeast Regionals.
