BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's soccer junior goalkeeper Joseph Kuta was named Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week for the second time this year, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Kuta is the first UB athlete to earn the recognition twice in a season since Brittany Kuras in 2014.
An Economics major with a 3.936 GPA, Kuta had a great weekend between the pipes for the Bulls as he made a season-high nine saves in UB's 0-0 draw at Bowling Green, helping the Bulls earn the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament. With the clean sheet, Kuta tied Bobby Shuttleworth's program record for clean sheets in a season with 10.
The Mississauga, Ontario native put together one of the best regular seasons in program history this season as he owns a 11-3-3 overall record to go along with a 0.79 goals-against average, .813 save percentage and 10 shutouts. The junior finished the regular season with 61 saves while notching the most wins in a season by an UB goalkeeper since 2008. Kuta is currently holding a 265:43 minute shutout streak, his second longest streak of the season.
Buffalo will open up the MAC Tournament on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm as they will take on No. 2 seeded Bowling Green in the semifinal match. Winner of Friday's match will take on the winner of No. 1 Akron and No. 4 Western Michigan in the MAC Championship match on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
