ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team ran its winning streak to nine games and remained undefeated in MAC play with a 73-66 win over Ohio on Friday night at the Convocation Center in Athens. UB led wire-to-wire in the contest as it improved to 16-5 on the season and 8-0 in the MAC.
The Bulls opened the game on a 9-2 run, but Ohio was able to cut it within one with 10:13 left in the opening half. Buffalo responded by scoring eight straight as a layup from Ikenna Smart put the Bulls ahead, 22-13. Ohio cut the lead to just three with 5:05 left, but UB went on another run, this time 9-1, to take a 31-20 advantage, its largest of the first half.
UB scored the first five points of the second half as a three pointer from CJ Massinburg gave the Bulls a 36-22 lead, it largest of the game. Every time Buffalo took a big lead, Ohio would make a run though pulling within six with 6:16 left.
Buffalo had one run left as an 8-1 advantage gave the Bulls a 65-52 advantage. During that run, junior Nick Perkins became the 21st player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Perkins scored the final five points of the run.
Ohio responded by scoring seven straight before the Bulls got a big three from Jeremy Harris to regain a nine-point lead. Ohio would pull to within five twice over the final 1:35. The Bulls were able to hit free throws late to come away with the road win.
Perkins finished with a game-high 20 points on his milestone evening, while adding seven rebounds. Harris was one of two players to record a double-double as he had his third of the year with 17 points and 10 boards.
Smart had the first double-double of his career with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, the second straight game that Buffalo had a player with 14 rebounds in a game. Massinburg added 11 points and eight rebounds.
As a team, UB finished with 51 rebounds, the first time since last season against Ohio that the Bulls have recorded 50 rebounds in a game.
Massinburg and Perkins now become the first set of UB juniors to record 1,000 points in the same season since Rasaun Young and Mike Martinho did it in 1997.
UB is now just the third MAC team since 2005 to start a season 8-0.
