Baseball Welcomes Miami (OH) For Home Opening Series Starting Friday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team will open up their home portion of their schedule with a three-game set starting on Friday afternoon against the Miami (OH) RedHawks at Amherst Audobon Field. The Bulls (11-17, 4-5 MAC) will take on Miami (OH) on Friday at 3:00 pm followed by a game on Saturday at 1:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm.

The Bulls have been on the road for their first 28 games of the regular season and are coming off of a victory over cross-town rival Canisius on Tuesday night at Demske Sports Complex, 5-4. The Bulls opened up Mid-American Conference play going 2-1 on the road at Toledo before going 1-2 against Eastern Michigan and Ohio in the last two conference series.

Buffalo is being led offensively by junior Vinny Mallaro who is having the best season of his UB career as he leads the team in all major categories. Mallaro is currently carrying a .333 batting average to go along with a career-high five home runs, 23 RBI and 21 runs scored while also owning a .604 slugging percentage. The outfielder also has notched nine doubles while also notching the first cycle in program history earlier this season against Tennessee Martin.

Redshirt freshman first baseman Andrew Taft has had a nice start to his UB career as he is currently batting .297 to go along with two homers, 17 RBI and 11 runs scored while carrying a .426 slugging percentage. Senior Bobby Sheppard leads the Bulls in hits with 35 while batting .294 and collecting 17 runs and 12 RBI while playing shortstop. Fellow senior Mike Abrunzo is batting .289 with 16 runs scored and 15 RBI while owning a team-best on base percentage of .422 as he has earned a career-best 23 walks so far this season.

The Buffalo pitching staff has been a bright spot all season long, led by junior Alec Tuohy who transitioned into the starting rotation for the first time in his career. The righty has had a great start to the season as he owns a team-best 5-2 record to go along with a 2.96 ERA and a team-high 45 strikeouts. Making the transition from third base to pitcher, Charlie Sobieraksi has impressed as he owns a 4-2 record and a 5.21 ERA while striking out 40 batters. Out of the bullpen, Logan Harasta has made a team-high 15 appearances while owning a team-best 2.19 ERA while Mike Kaelin has a team-high five saves while striking out 30 batters in 23 innings of action.

Miami (OH) enters Friday with a 16-16 overall record and a 6-3 MAC mark after going 3-0 against Bowling Green last weekend. The RedHawks are led offensively by Ross Haffey who is batting .376 to go along with six homers, 28 RBI and 23 runs scored while owning a .624 slugging percentage and a .459 on base percentage. Gary Russo has provided the RedHawks with some pop in the middle of the lineup as he leads the MAC with 11 home runs. On the mound, Shane Smith owns a 3-1 record with a 3.38 ERA over 32 innings of action while Cole Gnetz leads the team with 35 strikeouts in 32.2 innings and owns a 2-2 overall record.

Game two of the series will be played at Amherst Audobon Field on Saturday at 1:00 pm as Charlie Sobieraski (4-2, 5.21 ERA) will take on Cole Gnetz (2-2, 4.96 ERA) from the RedHawks. In the series finale Sunday at 1:00 pm, Shawn Dubin (0-3, 4.02 ERA) will take on Zach Spears (1-4, 6.55 ERA).
