DAVIDSON, NC – The University at Buffalo baseball team collected their first runs of the season on Sunday morning but Marist handed them their third straight loss on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field, 8-3. Mike Abrunzo had an impressive day at the plate for UB as he finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI in the loss.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the opening inning as they were able to cross three runners across home plate, all with two outs. Tyler Kapuscinski drove in one run with a single to left field before Jack Shirk knocked in a pair with another single to left. Marist then added another run in the second inning to take the early 4-0 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, the Bulls were able to score their first run of the season in the fourth as Vinny Mallaro smashed a double to left field with two outs in the inning. Chris Kwitzer then dug in and notched a single to right center to score Mallaro from second. Kwitzer then moved over to second base with his first stolen base of the season but the Bulls couldn't score the junior from second, trailing 4-1 entering the fifth inning.
The Bulls had a strong start to the bottom of the fifth inning as Abrunzo notched a double to start the inning but UB wasn't able to score the senior. In the sixth the Bulls had a pair of baserunners on after walks but yet again, they were unable to get any closer.
The Red Foxes put the game away in the seventh inning as they were able to score three runs on four hits, making the score 7-1. They then added another run in the eighth to take the commanding 8-1 edge.
The Bulls showed some fight in the eighth inning as they were able to notch two runs. Kwitzer opened the inning with a double to left center field and then he advanced to third on a passed ball. Ben Vey brought him home with a double down the left field line before Connor Regan singled to move Vey to third with one out. Abrunzo then stepped in and scored Vey with a single to right center field, making the score 8-3. After a fielder's choice gave the Bulls two outs, Alex Thrower grounded out to second base to end the UB flurry in the eighth as Marist went on to win 8-3.
Abrunzo was able to collect the Bulls first three-hit game of the season while Kwitzer finished with two hits, his second multi-hit game of the season. Vey went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored and an RBI while Mallaro notched a hit and a run to extend his hitting streak to three games to start the season.
Charlie Sobieraski started on the mound for the Bulls and went 5.0 innings and allowing four runs while striking out six batters. Mike Kaelin and Blair Lakso each pitched a scoreless inning to give the Bulls a chance down the stretch.
Buffalo will return to action on Friday, Feb. 26 as they head down to Tennessee to take on Tennessee-Martin. The first game of the three-game set will start at 3:00 pm on Friday.
